Presented by KIWA London, Voices From Korea brings together the works of Kang Minsu, Kim Keetae, and Choi Byungjin to explore humanity's relationship with the world through three interconnected themes: warmth, memory, and survival. Through distinct visual languages, the artists reveal how we are inseparably bound to nature, time, and civilisation, questioning what sustains existence and what traces we leave behind.
Kang Minsu envisions human beings as Homo Luminescence—luminous beings generating their own inner light—translating invisible body heat into radiant fields of colour. Solitary figures enveloped in glowing reds and yellows evoke thermal imaging, rendering bodily presence visible within nature. Extending this concept to civilisation, his Map of Temperature contrasts human heat with nature’s cooling rhythms, offering an ecological reflection on how our lives leave lasting marks upon the world.
Kim Keetae combines documentary photography with painting to capture moments where reality and the surreal converge. A flash of lightning cutting across a distant landscape transforms the familiar into the uncanny, preserving a fleeting event as an enduring meditation. The stark contrast between nature’s vastness and the brevity of light highlights human fragility. In Kim's work, the sublime emerges from this encounter, revealing both the transience of life and the persistent resonance of memory.
Choi Byungjin explores survival and human relationships through distorted, intertwined figures. Bandaged hands, tense gestures, and fractured forms embody physical wounds alongside psychological anxiety. Drawing upon Heideggerian ontology, his paintings frame anxiety as a fundamental condition of existence shaped by our mortality. Rather than dwelling on suffering, Choi emphasises resilience; his figures express endurance, inviting viewers to recognise the quiet beauty that emerges through the persistent will to survive.
Across the exhibition, warmth represents the trace of a living body, memory bridges past and present, and survival reflects the drive to continue despite uncertainty. Voices From Korea invites viewers to reflect on the sensations, memories, and relationships that shape their lives, revealing the enduring strength within finite existence and the traces we leave in one another.
