CHUNG SUEJIN KOREA, b. 1969
Biography
Chung Suejin (b. 1969, Seoul) is a leading figure in contemporary Korean art, known for her exploration of human consciousness and perception through color and form. Trained in painting at Hongik University and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC), Chung has continuously questioned the essential nature and function of painting, developing a unique theoretical and visual framework.
At the core of her practice lies the concept of “Budo Theory”, an original theory she coined, which involves deconstructing and reconfiguring familiar shapes—such as boats, medicine bottles, and butterflies—to open new dimensions of perception. These transformed forms, paired with vivid color fields, evoke scenes that are at once familiar and unfamiliar, creating a heightened sensory experience for viewers. In her work, color functions not merely as a formal element, but as a psychological and emotional language.
Rather than relying on concrete narratives, Chung’s paintings emphasize the layered structures created by color and shape. This abstraction expands the potential of painting as a medium—inviting viewers to contemplate fundamental questions of awareness, perception, and existence. Her work offers a space where sensation and thought merge, stimulating both visual pleasure and intellectual reflection.
Chung has exhibited widely in major institutions and galleries both in Korea and abroad. Recent solo exhibitions include The Last Scenery of Mind (2023, Woogeun Gallery) and The Multidimensional Creatures and the Structure of Meaning (2018, Woogeun Gallery), among others. Through relentless experimentation and inquiry, Chung Suejin continues to redefine the language of contemporary painting.
