Bae Samsik is an artist who expresses life through a network of quadrangles. His work features a distinctive style that merges architectural elements with sculptural characteristics.
He creates his pieces by layering gel-like panels made from a mixture of stone powder and glue onto the canvas, incorporating relief-like elements. His approach, which places emphasis on auxiliary elements, reflects his unique artistic philosophy of elevating the peripheral to the central. Through repetition, arrangement, and layered depth, he seeks to convey infinite narratives within simple forms.
His works consist of sophisticated cubes that resemble architectural blueprints, symbolizing the harmony between old and new architecture. While they evoke the aesthetics of contemporary structures like the Amorepacific Building designed by David Chipperfield, they also incorporate influences from traditional Korean architecture. In particular, he draws inspiration from the structure of Mireuksaji, where a small central element forms the foundation of the entire composition.
Bae Samsik reinterprets the quadrangular perforated patterns of Gaya pottery and traditional Korean design in a modern context, incorporating them into his works. His compositions, reminiscent of smartphone app icons, create a visual language that fuses contemporary technology with Korean sentiment.
